David Burgess

David Burgess, born in 1953, worked five years as a repairer in the Weisshaar shop. While still in his twenties, he won nine gold medals in four VSA competitions (1976, 1978, 1980, 1982), for both tone and workmanship and in four categories (violin, viola, cello, and quartet). In 1982 he also became the first American to win a gold medal in Cremona’s Trienniale (for viola), as well as first prize for best instrument out of more than 300. He has since served as a judge for both VSA and Trienniale, and has been active in the Oberlin-VSA summer workshop.
